Nesting time!

Thank you to everybody who supported the sale of our nest boxes that were constructed by the Green Team. Follow the advice below, and hopefully you will soon get some feathered friends enjoying their luxurious new homes!

Siting your blue tit nest box

  • Place your nest box between 1m and 5m above the ground, in a position where it is sheltered from  direct sun, wind and rain. Ideally, place the box so the entrance hole is facing north-east.
  • Avoid sites where foliage obscures the entrance hole as a clear flight path is important and blue tits like to scan for predators before leaving the box.
  • Ensure the box is not easily accessible to predators and do not site too close to bird feeders as high levels of activity from visiting birds may disturb the nesting pairs.
  • Nest boxes are best put up in the spring. However, it is never too early or late to put up a nest box as some birds will use them to roost in during the winter.
