Parent Governor Vacancy

We urge you to please have a think about this. if you would like to apply, please return the form to the school office by 4th November. If you would like to discuss the role further please contact Mrs Hirst who is very happy to chat or put you in touch with a parent governor to find out more.

Thank You

A big thank you to the Wardman family for the bag of daffodil bulbs that they donated.   These will be planted by the children on their return after half term.   They will bring a lovely splash of colour and hope for spring.

Parent Evenings

We are adapting our parents evening this year to enable virtual face to face conversations.  There will be 8 appointments available for each year on these dates:

9th November      for Year 3, Year 1 and Year 5

11th November    for Year 3, Year 1 and Year 5

12th November    for Year R

16th November    for Year 2, Year 4 and Year 6

18th November    for Year 2, Year 4 and Year 6

19th November    for Year R

Appointments will be booked via a link in Google Classroom that will enable you to book a 10 minute slot with your child's teacher.  This link wil be sent out to parents via Google Classroom on Monday 2nd November.  This is the same time allocation that we normally give and still enables a face to face conversation. The appointments will happen via Zoom, with the class teachers in charge of the waiting room. We ask you to 'Zoom in' just before your appointment time and your class teacher will finish their previous conversation, and then bring you in to the meeting. This way, only one set of parents will be able to speak to the teacher at once, confidentiality will be maintained and the evenings can flow easily. We will ask you to be punctual and will be keeping to timings. Please book your slots as a first step from the 2nd November.  When all appointments have been booked a Zoom link will be sent out ready for the meetings.

BBC Children in Need

Children in Need will be held on Friday 13th November with Own Clothes Day for £1.

The school council are working on activities for each class to do on the day and we will let you know nearer the date as to what this will be.

As always, it is an incredibly good cause and helps children all over the country so your support is appreciated.

Core Value Trophies

Due to the whole school community not being at school this week, we will be awarding these in the first week of term 2.

Spread the word....

In Term 2 we will be holding new parent sessions for prospective Year R parents. Slots are filling up fast but we ask that you spread the word and encourage any friends with children who will be starting school in September 2021 to attend or make contact with us.

We do have some places in other year groups too, if you know of anyone who may be keen to join our school family, encourage them to make contact with us!

Photographs

We are delighted with the new style of individual and sibling photographs. Glancing through the proofs we can see that the real essence of children has been captured by the photographer's lens, we hope that you love them too.

Please return these to the office by Monday 9th November.   Unfortunately we cannot accept any late orders.

Term 2 Clubs and Forest School

We are currently seeking advice from KCC regarding the delivery of Forest school to children in Classes 1,2 and 3. We will keep you informed. As it stands, Year 6 have two more weeks after half term.

We will not be providing any clubs in Term 2.

Anti-Bullying Week

This year Anti-Bullying Week is going to be held on 16th-20th November 2020. We will be holding an odd socks day to raise awareness alongside many activities in class and in Collective Worship. Bullying is not acceptable and will not be tolerated. We will also be working with pupils for them to fully understand that bullying means that behaviour is repeated and intentional.

ParentPay

Please can we remind parents to sign up for ParentPay over the half term?   We are 'cashless' now and so all payments to us will be via this site, including the donations for charities coming up.   If you have any queries at all, please email the school office.

Thank you.

Reflections on Term 1

Well, how to sum up this term...

The over-riding feelings for me are: 1. how fabulous it is to have all of our pupils back in school at once and 2. a pride that we have achieved so much during the last 8 weeks.

I would be covering up the truth if I said that this term had not been difficult, it has, we have had to reinvent many things. But, there are also silver linings and things that we will keep when we return to an 'un-bubbled' world. Things such as Year R having their lunch around one large table in the annexe, like a family around a dining room table having a conversation over dinner.

The Bubbles have been a success and have helped children to return to school safely and calmly, the children have felt secure in these spaces and supported by the adults within them.  We have had to stagger everything and we thank you for your support on this. I too would like to thank our wonderful staff, for their flexibility, dedication and ability to be on 'perma-duty' as all duties happen within Bubbles with support from myself, Mrs Macmillan and Mrs Salter.

Our CG family is back together but Bubbled. The lovely weather on most Monday and Friday afternoons has enabled outdoor Collective Worship with Classes 2,3 and 4 sat outside their classrooms distanced from each other. Collective worship has also been enhanced by recorded assemblies from both Caroline at Goudhurst and from the Diocese.

Despite the testing times we are currently living in, we also have a lot to be thankful of at the moment and we celebrate this too.

Our first Core Value of Community has been in evidence all the way through the term, both within the school and the wider community. Next term we move onto Resilience, something I feel that I have grown in recently! We will, as always, be encouraging the children to do their best, to know their worth and to achieve their potential. Staff are now really aware of where their classes are as both individuals and collectively.  So, onwards and upwards with the children's learning, a focus on the essential skills of reading , writing, phonics and maths, but also with a topic based focus in the afternoons, pulling core skills through these lessons as much as possible. Using a language of possibility and success, not one of lost learning and gaps, to encourage the children to rise to the challenge.

Our new Reception children have made a fabulous start to their lives at CG; so settled and enjoying learning which is so wonderful to see. Our Year 6 pupils are beginning their journeys to secondary transition; a time that can be stressful for both pupils and parents.

Our recent COVID-19 case at CG and the subsequent isolation of the Class 3 Bubble has been tricky for all concerned. The person affected is doing well and we send them our collective love and best wishes. The timing over half term has enabled a deep clean and a total break from people in the building. Thank you to all the staff who have set and monitored learning for Class 3 and enabled the curriculum to continue.  Thank you to all the pupils and adults at home who have engaged with this.

As we think about Term 2 and all the normal exciting and festive things that happen, we once again will need to rethink many of these events. We will be putting our creative heads together to try and ensure that we can be as festive as possible under the current restrictions. If you have any brainwaves please let us know.

We wish you all a very relaxed, happy and healthy half term break.

Nicola Hirst
